Sarcophagus of “the Erudite Child” and the Seasons |
|
Origin: Oued Rand, suburbs of Zaghouan Dating: Beginning of III century A.D. Materials: Marble

Occupying the front of a marble tomb, seven characters are divided on a register made up of five niches. In that of the centre, which is the most important, the three Graces can be recognized. They are represented nude. Laterally on the sides, every niche houses boys; most likely the four Seasons. Represented this way, these allegories incarnate the renewal and the promised eternity for the young deceased.
